Paper reviewing in CMS:

"Physics approval": process, steered by the Physics Coordinator
"Publication approval": process, steered by the Publication Committee

AN Analysis Note - an essential basis for all the steps in the publication process -
the presence of up-to-date, detailed and complete documentation in the form
       of one or more ANs.
ARC Analysis Review Committee - appointed jointly by the Physics Coordinator and
the chairperson of the Publication Committee.

The ARC is charged with following the analysis during the entire Collaboration-wide
approval process.

Commenting Process

  1. Scientific review submitting comments to ARC (Analysis Review Committee) and authors = CDS (CERN Document Server)
  2. Request of changes to the authors by sending requests to the CBI (Collaboration Board Institute representative) and their deputies CBD = CMS Software
  • CMS members receive an e-mail with a link to the paper and the deadline for comments.
  • All papers are at: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/collection/CMS%20Publication%20Drafts
  • Login: upper right corner using NICE authentication (same as e-mail account)
  • Click "Search"
  • Click "Detailed Record" or the link that comes in the e-mail, e.g. <http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/#>
    • "Additional Information for the Analysis" gives the composition of the Analysis Review Committee.
      • CADI (CMS Analysis Database Interface) record: supporting Analysis Notes, the Physics Analysis Summary, Webpage of the analysis, the hypernews forum and names of the submitter of the analysis and of the ARC.
    • Existing comments can be seen clicking on the number
    • "CMS Author List" takes you to the author list of the paper
  • Comments to the paper can be submitted via "Submit a comment";
    • Typed (copy pasted) directly in the window, or
    • Upload a pdf file or a zip file, or
    • Add an URL
  • Once the comment is submitted a mail is sent to the submitter

CMS Conference Committee

Every member of CMS has the right to present CMS results at conferences, workshops and meetings. Basically there are only two rules you have to obey:

  • Only approved material may be presented.
  • The procedure within our conference system CINCO has to be followed. In particular all talks and posters with CMS specific content and presented to non-CMS people need to be recorded in CINCO and approved by the committee and/or the relevant conveners. The only exceptions are university seminars.

Here is a short guide how you can become a speaker or a poster presenter at a conference:

  • Bookmark the CINCO web page https://cms-mgt-conferences.web.cern.ch/cms-mgt-conferences/Default.aspx and regularly update your profile (in My Info)
  • List the announced conferences (in Conferences)
  • Choose your favorite subject or meeting place and click on the conference title
  • Check if a talk and an abstract of your interest is already defined
    • If yes, you can nominate yourself through the system (don't be shy, self nomination is the standard procedure). Even if there are already other candidates for this presentation add your name (the committee likes to have choices). You may ask your supervisor or the working group convener to support your nomination (again through CINCO).
    • If there is no appropriate talk or poster, create a presentation yourself by adding an abstract and nominate yourself or somebody else (in Presentations). To speed up the process you should ask the appropriate working group convener to approve your abstract (remember rule 1).
  • Starting from CINCO the CMS Conference Committee will decide on the presenter taking into account profile, experience, recommendations, and the previous history.
  • Depending on the type of the conference
    • the approved abstracts are sent by the committee to the conference and the speaker selection is completed after the talks have been accepted (typical for physics conferences) or alternatively
    • the speaker selection is carried out first and the selected speaker is asked to submit the abstract himself (typical for instrumentation conferences).
