Machine Learning Researcher

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) develops fundamental and applied research in areas such as high energy physics (HEP), scientific instrumentation, high performance computing (HPC) and digital innovation. Implemented in 2003 with support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), SPRACE enables the participation of HEP researchers from the State of São Paulo in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the particle accelerator of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). We are seeking highly qualified Machine Learning Researchers to work on applications of machine learning techniques to the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) experiments. These positions are sponsored by FAPESP, by means of Technical Training Scholarships (https://bv.fapesp.br/en/347/technical-training/).

Job Description

SPRACE performs fundamental research to understand the deepest structure of matter; we primarily simulate, collect and analyze data for the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the LHC. The research team is multidisciplinary, including particle physicists, computing scientists and electronics engineers. The successful candidate will participate in the development of new simulation, reconstruction and analysis methods for the data taken at the High-Luminosity LHC using deep learning methods. The candidate will work together with the SPRACE team on attacking these problems, developing solutions, giving support to the physicists and sharing the results in the form of research papers and conference presentations. A more detailed (but not thorough list) of topics within this project follows:

  • Generative methods (Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Encoders) for simulation of particle detectors;
  • Sequence analysis (Transformers, Graph based networks) for tracking reconstruction;
  • Pattern recognition and filtering in extremely crowded/noisy environments, for HL-LHC tracking;

Requirements

The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or other related areas; alternatively, they must have a B.Sc. degree and, at least, 5 years experience in the private sector. The skills and qualifications that we are looking for include, but are not restricted to:

  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong knowledge in statistics, machine learning and Neural Networks, more specifically on the following techniques:
    • Generative Adversarial Networks;
    • Graph Based Networks;
    • Transformers;
  • Some experience on applying machine learning techniques to very large data sources;
  • Some experience with data visualization;
  • Experience with TensorFlow and/or PyTorch;
  • Proficiency in English;

Postdoctoral Position

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) is opening postdoctoral positions for outstanding research fellows to work in association with the UNESP group on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Grant funds are provided by FAPESP, the São Paulo Research Foundation.

The SPRACE research team is engaged in two CMS physics analysis groups: Exotic physics (Beyond the Standard Model) and Heavy Ion physics. SPRACE also operates a WLCG Tier-2 cluster and is responsible for the implementation of a state-wide grid infrastructure, GridUNESP, which serves more than 100 research groups from different scientific communities. SPRACE is also involved in R&D activities on the conceptual design, simulation and proof-of-concept of the data acquisition (DAQ) electronics of the outer tracker detector of the CMS experiment.

The positions

We are opening different Postdoc positions and the successful applicant is expected to get involved in:

  • Data analysis activities of SPRACE either in dark matter searches or high-density nuclear matter research within the CMS Experiment, or
  • Phenomenological studies on dark matter or hadrons under extreme conditions, or
  • DAQ Systems for Particle Detectors in HEP Experiments

The candidates directly involved in the CMS experiment are expected to have a Ph.D. in Experimental High Energy Physics. A previous experience in one of the LHC experiments is an important asset. She/he should have the ability to carry out independent research in HEP and carry out physics analyses related to those of interests to the SPRACE group, and must,

  • help to comply with our responsibilities in the collaboration,
  • interact with different HEP groups worldwide,
  • travel to CERN (whenever possible) to work on site,
  • support and advise interns and students in the project.

Science Journalism Internship

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) is opening a position of Science Journalist Internship for an outstanding professional to work together with our team of researchers in High Energy Physics (HEP), Computer Science and Engineering.

The SPRACE group works in association with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from CERN where it is engaged in the physics analysis and in the R&D in instrumentation for the upgrade of the CMS detector. The SPRACE implemented and operates a computational structure (Tier-2) of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) and we were responsible for the creation of GridUnesp which provides high performance processing to more than 100 research groups from different areas. SPRACE has collaborations with several universities and international research centers such as the University of Pisa, Edinburgh, Southampton, Fermilab, and CERN.

We have a strong partnership with leading international companies like Intel and Huawei. Our joint projects include the modernisation of HEP codes and the development of software-defined network (SDN) solutions.

SPRACE has a strong outreach program which includes the distribution of 25,000 posters on HEP to all Brazilian High Schools, the development of the SPRACE Game and the promotion of the Masterclass in Particle Physics annual event.

Through the involvement in our projects the intern will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the scientific organisation of large international collaborations. She/he will be able to write press releases and articles on scientific subjects with the support of experienced researchers and will be able to practice how to make science more attractive to the general public.

Requirements

The intern must have a Master degree in journalism or in technical fields (physical, engineering, or computer science)

Senior Data Scientist

NCC/Unesp is the first Intel Modern Code Partner in Latin America (https://software.intel.com/en-us/modern-code/live-workshops). Such partnership has been created to disseminate knowledge about High Performance Computing and Data Science techniques to exploit Intel multi/many-core architectures. This pioneer cooperation has led to a new joint project: a Center of Excellence in Machine Learning. The goal of the center is to develop research, perform consultations and deliver training sessions in this field with Intel, CERN and Caltech as partners. Young Investigator Grant in Experimental HEP

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) is seeking highly qualified young researchers to work in association with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) group in São Paulo. The SPRACE research group is engaged in the CMS data analysis investigating the physics beyond the standard model and heavy ions collisions. We are also involved in the R&D CMS upgrades developing the Level 1 trigger for the tracking detector.

The Young Investigator Awards provided by FAPESP, the São Paulo Research Foundation, contemplates the grant and financial support the scientific activities of an outstanding researcher, which include materials, consumables, third-party services, transportation and maintenance for research activities, support to visiting researchers, and fellowships in different levels. Post-doctoral position in Holographic QCD for Hadron Structure and Quark-Gluon Plasma

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) is opening a postdoctoral position for an outstanding research fellow to work on holographic QCD for hadron structure and quark-gluon plasma.

  • Take a leading role in the use of holographic models in the phenomenology of hadronic interactions of charmed hadrons with ordinary hadrons like protons, neutrons and pions, and their behavior in a strongly interacting medium as the quark-gluon plasma;

Senior C++ Developer for Parallelization of Scientific Applications

The Center for Scientific Computing of the São Paulo State University (Núcleo de Computação Científica da Universidade Estadual Paulista – UNESP) in São Paulo, Brazil is opening two positions for outstanding senior C++ developers or research fellows to work in association with the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in USA and CERN in Europe. Grant funds are provided by Intel, through the Intel Parallel Computing Center (IPCC) program.

The fellows will be deeply involved in the R&D efforts to adapt High Energy Physics (HEP) software tools to the modern computing architectures. The work will be mostly concentrated on Geant4, a toolkit for the simulation of particle-­‐ matter interactions that has been developed for almost two decades by an international collaboration of physicists and computer scientists.

The successful candidate will participate in R&D studies, development and prototyping of different strategies and algorithms to run HEP simulation applications efficiently with multiple computational threads in new and upcoming Intel hardware. An important aspect of this position is the research, implementation and evaluation of existing and new algorithms required by Geant4 type of applications using many computational threads. The work of the successful candidate is expected to add value in computing design and implementation quality, using physics judgment.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work on the following activities:

  • Port, test and measure performance of HEP applications, such as Geant4, on current and new parallel platforms, including the Intel MIC architecture;
  • Develop and support strategies and algorithm for simulation tools for these HEP applications to run efficiently on the Intel MIC architecture;
  • Devise and implement improved computational techniques, based on physics analysis and/or modeling technical expertise, to meet the requirements of scientific systems;
  • Extend documentation to further facilitate the use of these tools;
  • Interface with teams that develop and support detector simulation and physics generator packages;

Requirements

The applicants must have:

  • 5+ years of experience developing C++ applications in high performing environments;
  • Advanced development skills in C++, including STL and templates, debugging and memory profiling and performance tuning on Linux systems;

Post-Doctoral Position in Phenomelogy of High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

The São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) is opening a postdoctoral position for an outstanding research fellow to work on phenomenology of the hydrodynamical description provided by the code SPheRIO in association with the experimental activities of the Heavy Ion group at SPRACE. One of the goals is to implement a real hydrodynamic calculation provided by the SPheRIO code in Monte Carlo simulators within the CMS framework, strengthening the interaction between the expertise of theorists and of experimentalists in the group. We have 2 (two) open positions of Software Developer at Levels DTC-B and DTC-C (see below) to work in a joint project with Intel and CERN. The fellowships were provided by the program Bolsas de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico e Industrial para Programas de Tecnologia de Informação e Comunicação (TIC / FNDCT)

Modalidade DTC-B

Requisitos Mínimos

Profissionais de qualquer área do conhecimento, doutor, mestre, graduado ou profissional com nível equivalente ao de técnico, com experiência profissional mínima comprovada de 1, 4, 8 e 10 anos respectivamente, em atividades de desenvolvimento de software e sistemas informáticos ou em atividades ligadas ao processo de inovação à que se propõe o projeto submetido ao CNPq.

Equivalência

  • PhD com 1 ano de formado
  • MsC com 4 anos de formado
  • BsC com 8 anos de formado
  • Técnico com 10 anos de formado

Valor da Mensalidade: R$ 6.000,00
