Search for Diboson Resonances
During Run 1 and Run 2 our group have been strongly involved in the search for diboson resonances (WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, ZH, HH). In this context, we have given strong contributions and developed expertise in the signatures of boosted objects. Our participation on these searches can be summarized as such:
- We have participated directly in 7 published CMS analyses
- We completed 1 phenomenological paper
- Our students produced 4 Master dissertations
- Our group produced 5 PhD theses
Search for Dark Matter
The evidence for dark matter is well-established from several independent astronomical and cosmological observations. So far dark matter has shown its face only on gravitational interaction, no evidence
of its interaction (besides gravity) with the known matter was found. Thus, the nature of dark matter remains a mystery; the astrophysics and particle physics communities are working hard to search for interactions that might reveal its nature, studying the direct and indirect detection, as well as production in collider experiments. Our group is involved in the CMS effort on searching for dark matter, having started its activities in the monojet signal. We are now involved in the mono-X group, working on a search that would include all channels where X is a standard model hadronic object. The goal would be to constrain all the models that predict such topologies. Our currents activities can be summarized as following:
- We have participated directly in 1 published CMS analysis
- We produced 1 phenomenological paper
- There are 3 master students and 3 professors working in this subject

Instrumentation for the CMS Upgrade
The Phase-2 Upgrade of the CMS Tracker
Some Accomplishments
Implementation of the GBT link in the uDTC firmware
The GigaBit Transceiver x (GBTx) is a high-speed Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designed for operation in high radiation environments, like those experienced in the center of LHC experiments. It provides a large number of electrical serial interfaces (ePorts) through which the other components of a detector front-end can communicate with the back-end electronics. These electrical signals, which can be monodirectional or bidirectional, are multiplexed by the GBTx into a high speed serial link, designed for operation with an optical transceiver, such as the radiation-resistant Versatile TRansceiver x (VTRx) used in our case. The optical connection runs through a pair of fibers and reaches the back-end board, where an optical transceiver is interfaced with a Field-Programmable Grid Array chip, hosting the read-out and control firmware. This firmware has to include a communication layer compatible with the one used by the GBT link protocol, such that data can be exchanged between the FPGA on the back-end board and the GBTx on the front-end module. This communication layer usually includes the GBT-FPGA firmware core developed by CERN. I worked on the integration of this core in the uDTC firmware, and established the correct configuration parameters to guarantee a reliable operation. uDTC is the official firmware used in CMS to develop the data acquisition framework for the tracker and to perform the testing and certification of the detector modules.
Implementation of the SCA slow control protocol in the uDTC firmware
Detector modules host a number of different configurable electronic components. For example, the outer tracker is composed of two types of modules, and each individual module hosts either 16 CBC and 2 CIC chips (2S modules) or 16 SSA, 16 MPA and 2 CIC chips (PS modules), each offering a rich set of configuration parameters, for a total size of many tens of kilobits. All these parameters are programmed using the Inter-Integrated chip Communication bus (I2C). This standard offers an advantage in terms of board resources, since it only requires two wires to be used for communicating with many chips, at the price of a higher complexity in the master circuit, which has to be implemented with special open-collector logic. The Slow Control Adapter (SCA) is a radiation-hard chip designed by CERN that responds to the various management needs of a detector module, like acting as an I2C, SPI or JTAG master, measuring voltages and temperatures, driving its pin in a configurable generic pattern, to name a few. The SCA is used on the current detector module prototypes. I worked on integrating into the uDTC firmware the GBT-SC core, which is used to control the SCA chip on the module, and to establish the configuration procedure to set it up for reliable operation. The setup used to integrate the GBTx control code into the uDTC firmware has also been used in the SCA code integration, as the VLDB card offers an SCA chip to be used for development. The implementation of optical read-out and control in uDTC via the GBTx and SCA chips in the first half of 2019 was a critical step in the commissioning of the module testing toolchain, such that it would be ready for the test beams planned in late 2019 and early 2020.
Full optical operation of the outer tracker modules in the uDTC firmware
The current prototypes for the Phase-2 tracker modules are composed of a service hybrid (SEH), two front-end hybrids (FEHs) and (optionally) a pair of silicon sensors. The SEH is equipped with two DC-DC converters powering the rest of the electronics, a GBTx chip and associated VTRx optical transceiver and an SCA chip to control the read-out chips on the FEHs. Each FEH hosts either 8 CBC or 8 SSA and 8 MPA read-out chips, and one CIC concentrator chip. The read-out chips can be wire-bonded to the silicon sensors so the latter can be read out by their electronics.
The initialization and setup of the whole module is a complex operation reuiring a long series of steps to be followed, namely:
- Set-up of the external power supply and powering up the module.
- Establishing the connection between the GBTx and the uDTC firmware.
- Configuration of the GBTx, to generate clocks for the module and to set up the eLink to the SCA chip and the ones used to read out data from from the FEH.
- Configuration of the SCA, so it can control the chips on the FEH.
- Configuration of the read-out chips on the FEH (CBC or SSA/MPA) via the SCA.
- Configuration of the concentrator chips on the FEH (CIC) via the SCA.
- Synchronization of the read-out chips with the concentrator ones.
- Synchronization of the concentrator chips with the GBTx.
- Synchronization of the concentrator chips with the uDTC firmware.
This setup procedure was developed at SPRACE up to the steps involving the configuration of the SCA chip, and it was then further developed by me and ing. André Cascadan of UNESP during a mission to CERN in May/June 2019 at the Tracker Phase-2 DAQ development laboratory, where we partially assembled a module and prepared it for full remote operation, so it could be operated for tests without requiring the presence of a collaborator in the laboratory. The rest of the procedure was then developed in collaboration with colleagues from DESY and CERN, and it is now being routinely used to test the pre-production modules on the lab bench and in test beams.
Development of an ATCA Intelligent Platform Media Controller firmware
An Intelligent Platform Media Controller (IPMC) is a component of a PICMG Advanced Telecommunication Computing Architecture (ATCA) system. This standard is the one which has been chosen by CMS for the back-end electronic boards for the Phase-2 tracker, due to its support for high power boards, for high-speed backplane communications, and for its wide adoption in the commercial telecommunication industry market. The IPMC firmware has the responsibility to perform the board initialization handshake with the shelf manager controller, has to report to the latter the onboard sensors, their readings (for example, the temperature of the main chips) and the acceptable ranges in which these values can fluctuate. The IPMC is a critical safety component, since it is the device that will power off a board in case it overheats or it is powered at voltages too high or too low to guarantee reliable operation.
The DTC board will need an IPMC, to manage its powering and to monitor its health while it is hosted inside the ATCA shelves in the CMS service cavern. Given the apparent absence of an open-source IPMC firmware solution compatible with the planned architecture for the DTC management chip (a Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+ EG system on a chip), I organized the development at SPRACE of one such solution starting in late 2018 and currently in progress. The development program sees the participation of SPRACE Instrumentation Laboratory researchers, students from the department of electronic engineering at UNESP FEIS (Ilha Solteira, SP), students from Céntro Universitario FEI (São Bernardo do Campo, SP) and researchers from the Institute of Data Processing of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany).
The open source IPMC solution developed at SPRACE, which has been named OpenIPMC, has already been presented in meetings at CERN and got considerable attention from collaborators in the US and in Europe, as its open source nature eases debugging, customization and porting to other architectures. Currently the firmware is being developed on an Ultra96 development board by AVNET mated to a Pulsar-IIb ATCA board designed by Fermilab. An ATCA demonstrator board with more functions that will serve as an evolution to the current development board is being studied in collaboration with KIT researchers, and a first prototype is expected to be ready in January 2020.

The Associative Memory Alternative for the CMS Phase-2 Track Finder
Timeline of SPRACE Involvement
- Jun/2014 : SPRACE-Fermilab collaboration kick-off with the visit of AAS, EMG, MVSF and SFN to Ted Liu’s AM+FPGA group.
- Oct/2014-Apr/2015 : LAR and TCP worked at Fermilab on the Pulsar II ATCA hardware that was develop at Fermilab. They implemented a control system known as Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI), required by the ATCA Standard. They also implemented the required network and protocols necessary to remotely program the Pulsar 2b FPGA. Both functions were implemented in a micro-controller of the board. Although the team has good experience in the ATCA environment, if necessary, they may be involved in the development of micro-TCA systems. Several Internal Notes were published by them: XVC Service a New IPMC Functionality ( SIN-R 01/2014), Multiple ATCA Shelves Control Topology ( SIN-R 01/2015), and ATCA/IPMI Service A New Pulsar 2b IPMC Functionality ( SIN-R 02/2015).
- May/2015 : LAR back to São Paulo is in charge of development of a firmware for the Pulsar IIb FPGA. This firmware, the Data Sourcing System (DSS) emulates a vertical slice of the CMS detector. The system acts as a data sourcing performed by 10 Pulsar IIb Boards and can send 4 Tbps of data stream to emulate real collision events at high luminosity LHC. The firmware developed includes a user interface to provide data samples, synchronization system, and high speed serial link protocols. The work started in Brazil (May/2015-Dec/2015), continued at Fermilab (Jan/2016-Dec/2016) and is been finished now in Brazil.
- May/2015-Dec/2015 : SA and CAB did simulation studies and data samples generation from the Outer Tracker. They have studied two frameworks from the two subgroups of the AM+FPGA approach, from Fermilab and from Lyon. These studies were important for our understanding on how to perform the simulations and have a connection with the DSS project, which need these samples as input in a specific format.
- Jan/2016-Jun/2016 : SA worked at Fermilab, helping in the production of samples to be used for the data sourcing and the data delivery firmware. They were physics events (single muon, multi muon, TTbar, etc.) converted into binary format files to be read by the data sourcing system. Further a virtual cabling map was also developed. It was optimized (using phi symmetry) to study the stub data rates at different stages of data processing and to achieve load balancing in phi-symmetric regions inside a trigger tower (one vertical slice). This serves as a baseline for future optimizations. Testing of the new Pulsar IIb boards was also performed at Fermilab.
- Jun/2016-Dec/2016 : SA and CAB performed dedicated studies involving events with high-pT jets (pT > 100 GeV). These studies were important to understand the performance of the AM+FPGA approach in an environment with high-density of energetic tracks. They have setup a code to generate high-pT jets events using Pythia6 and validated these events using the simulation framework from the Fermilab group. These samples were stored at T2-BR-SPRACE and EOS storages and were used by many people in the group for emulation studies of the AM+FPGA approach in Fermilab.
- Jun/2016 : AMC and VF joined SPRACE Instrumentation team.
- Jul/2016-Dec/2016 : VF went to Fermilab to take part in the Pulsar IIb boards tests. Besides that, a system using python scripts was developed to automatize hardware tests procedures and the tuning of optical links. Contributions were also made to develop, test and debug the ATCA fullmesh backplane communication.
- Jul/2016-Dec/2016 : AMC from Brazil implemented the User Interface of DSS using the IPbus protocol. This was important not only to validate the compatibility of DSS with different protocols, but also to use the IPbus itself, which is a protocol developed and maintained by the CERN community. This makes the DSS more accessible to other projects.
- Jan/2017-Mar/2017 : AMC performed the necessary actions to assemble an ATCA setup at SPRACE in São Paulo with a shelf, a switch and two Pulsar IIb boards. The idea is to assemble an infrastructure in Brazil, like the one used by Fermilab, to aid Pulsar board development and make this technology accessible to all researchers and engineers in house.
- Since Jan/2017 : AMC and VF are working together to enhance the FPGA optical links integrity while pushing the speed of the communication to the upper limit. They just published an Internal Note on the Influence of clock jitter on Xilinx MGT ( SIN-P 02/2017).

The Phase-2 Upgrade of the CMS High-Level Trigger
CMS Trigger and Data Acquisition System
The CMS Trigger and Data Acquisition (DAQ) System (TriDAS) was designed to inspect the detector information at the full LHC crossing frequency of 40 MHz and to select events at a maximum rate of O(10^3) Hz for archiving and later offline analysis. The required rejection power of O(10^4) is too large to be achieved in a single processing step, if a high efficiency is to be maintained for the physics phenomena CMS studies. For this reason, the full selection task is split into 2 steps: the Level-1 Trigger (L1T) and the High-Level Trigger (HLT).
The L1T is a synchronous FPGA-based system designed to reduce the rate of events accepted for further processing to less than 100 kHz. The L1T reads out the detector information only for the muon spectrometers and calorimetry systems, and with a reduced granularity. It delivers a maximum Level-1 Accept (L1A) rate of 100 kHz, with a maximum latency of 3.8 microseconds. After the Phase-1 Upgrade, the L1T allows for up to 512 algorithms to contribute to the overall trigger decision for the experiment. Besides trigger algorithms to select basic, high-pt objects, these also include prescaled low-threshold triggers for efficiency measurements and detector calibration; they also include sophisticated algorithms for correlating muons with jets (for improved b-tagging), calculating invariant masses of pairs of objects, checking Vector Boson Fusion topological conditions, amongst others. Upon the arrival of the L1A, the DAQ reads out the CMS detector in its entirety and sends the packaged information (the event) to the second step, the High-Level Trigger.
The HLT is an asynchronous software-based suite of algorithms designed to reduce L1A rate of 100 kHz to a final output rate of approximately 1 kHz; the algorithms are implemented in the offline CMS software framework (CMSSW) running in commodity CPUs installed in the experimental counting room, the "HLT farm". The HLT has access to the full information of the CMS detector, and it has to strike the balance between having high efficiency for the signals of interest; being fast enough to keep the HLT farm from filling up with untreated events from L1T; and being selective enough to keep the average total output rate around 1 kHz. Improvements to the HLT aspects come generally from three sources: the availability of better underlying hardware, including the emergence of multicore architectures; the improvement of the offline reconstruction algorithms, upon which the HLT is based; and specific HLT improvements, like regional reconstruction and simplified tracking.
Trigger and Data Acquisition in the High-Luminosity Era
The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is a proposed upgrade of the accelerator, bringing the instantaneous luminosity delivered to experiments to 75 Hz/nb and its centre-of-mass energy to the design value of 14 TeV. Over the proposed operation period of the HL-LHC, from 2026 to 2035, this will entail a twenty-fold increase of the produced data. The total pp collision dataset delivered by the LHC to the general-purpose experiments, including the upgrade era, amounts to 3000 fb^-1 (3 ab^-1) of integrated luminosity. All aspects of the experiments will have to undergo essential improvements, in what is known as the Phase-II upgrade, to maintain good physics performance during the high-luminosity operation. These include both engineering upgrades to the detectors to withstand the increased radiation levels and operational upgrades to address the extraordinary amounts of data produced. The following table, extracted from the "Phase-2 Upgrade of the CMS DAQ Interim Technical Design Report", shows the CMS Phase-2 trigger and DAQ projected running parameters.

The L1T Technical Design Report was released in 2020. It will be focused on the development of a new L1T that leverages the whole suite of CMS detector upgrades: extended tracker coverage, L1 Track Trigger capabilities, new electronics for the calorimeters, new muon stations. The HLT upgrade is described as a part of
The Phase-2 Upgrade of the CMS Data Acquisition and High Level Trigger Technical Design Report and is focused on demonstrating a path to a Phase-II High Level Trigger Menu that supports the CMS physics program. It includes efficiency, rate and timing considerations and extrapolations to the real system to be deployed in Runs 4 and 5; the usage of new technologies, like general-purpose GPUs and machine learning techniques, will play an integral part on the development.

Services to the Collaborations
CMS Collaboration
- AlpGen Production Leader, Thiago Tomei and after Flavia Dias were responsible for the production of AlpGen Monte Carlo samples for the whole collaboration. AlpGen is a code based on FORTRAN77, used to calculate the matrix elements of 2 → N processes, which is then combined with general purposes Monte Carlo softwares, such as PYTHIA or HERWIG, for the events to undergo hadronization and parton shower. The final events describe accurately some processes observed at the LHC. Due to the software architecture, the AlpGen execution in a computational cluster is a hard task. The service work includes the integration and support of the generator into the CMSSW software, and the collaboration-wide sample production. The Standard Model samples produced include W+jets, Z+jets, ttbar+jets, QCD multijets, W/Z+heavy quarks+jets, γ+jets, totalizing about 2 billion events for each production era taken part on.
- EXOTICA Trigger Contact for the Upgrade, Thiago Tomei has become the first to assume the position of EXOTICA Trigger Contact for the upgrade. The position aims to take a long view and work together with the Trigger Studies Group to ensure the evolution of the current EXOTICA demands to those foreseen to surface after the Phase 1 (LS2) and Phase 2 (LS3) upgrades. His primary charge will be to aid in the development of the triggers for the upgrade, but there is wide-open territory to explore different aspects from upgrade detector design to the trigger impact on various physics models.
- Trigger Validation, Flavia Dias is responsible for the trigger validation for SUSY related paths. The trigger system is responsible to decide which events in the hadronic collisions are relevant and should be recorded and stored in the Tier0, to be further processed, reconstructed and made available for analysis by the collaboration members. The decision is based in kinematic characteristics of physics objects (lepton, jets, Emiss, etc) to separate events with high momentum final states from ordinary QCD events. The trigger validation purpose is to assure the proper performance of the trigger system in order to avoid losses of interesting events during the collision data taking. The validation consists of the comparison, for each CMSSW release, of the global efficiency (the ratio of selected events over the total number of simulated events) of each trigger path in the list, using Monte Carlo samples of signal events in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Besides the validation reports and discussion of the problematic paths, I also develop and restructure the employed software, to adequate it to the trigger menu for high instantaneous luminosity collisions. In 2013 this service work is in charge of Jose Ruiz.
- CMS Data Analysis School, Flavia Dias was a tutor in 2012 edition. The CMS Data Analysis School takes place every year at the LHC Physics Center at Fermilab. It is a workshop which enables CMS physicists beginning analysis to easily join an ongoing analysis in a productive way, by teaching the methods and software framework through a series of tutorials, supervised by more experienced members of the collaboration. Besides learning, the students also develop their own analyzers, in order to be able to tackle more realistic problems at the tutorial sessions, with a “hands-on” emphasis. Flavia tutored the group in the “Search for new W′ bosons” long exercise, leading the students to get to run a state-of-the-art search for new physics with the full collision dataset. The participation as a tutor in this event is considered important inside the collaboration and formally counts as a service work activity.
- Trigger Shifts, Flavia Dias took part on the trigger system shifts on CMS collaboration on 2012, for 21 turns of 8 hours. The LHC experiments run 24 hours a day for almost the full year. For this schedule to be possible, every experimental aspect needs monitoring, from the detectors subsystems to the functioning of the computing system. This monitoring is done by the members of the experiment, in a shift schedule. Flavia took part on the CMS “trigger shifts”, having as duty to assure the proper performance of both the Level-1 and the High-Level-Trigger systems during data-taking. Thiago Tomei took part on 2015 shifts, taking 23 turns of 8 hours.
- Detector On-Call, Thiago Tomei acted for 2 weeks of Detector On-Call (DOC) for the High-Level Trigger System during 2015. As HLT-DOC, his responsibilities include testing, deploying and monitoring the HLT menus to be used for data taking; he liaisons with the Shift Leader, the Run Field Manager and the Trigger Studies group to make sure that the CMS Data Acquistion runs smoothly when the LHC delivers stable beams.
- Centrality Calculation for Heavy Ion, Sunil M. Dogra is responsible for "Centrality Calculation for Heavy Ion Collisions". In the LHC collider inelastic collisions between two random heavy ions can occur over the whole range of very peripheral collisions, where only a few nucleons at the edge of each heavy ion interact, to head-on collisions, where many nucleons in both heavy ions interact. Such inelastic collisions will have a specific "geometrical” overlap that can be characterized by approximating the heavy ions as hard spheres. Each specific collision can be envisioned as two spheres colliding with their respective centers separated by some distance, b, which we call the impact parameter. In actual experiments its impossible to measure "b". Models are required to make a connection between the experimentally defined “percent centrality” classes and various quantities of interest which are more specifically related to the geometry of the collision. In relativistic heavy ions often adopts the so-called Glauber model to make such connections. The quantities of interest include, for example, the impact paramter b, the number of nuclei that participate in the collision Npart, or the number of collisions the individual nucleons undergo, Ncoll.
- Heavy Ion DQM Contact person 2015 (Sunil M. Dogra): Another service pledged is the Data Quality Monitoring (DQM) for Centrality observables. A new offline package for Centrality DQM in the CMSSW framework was developed and is being used for the validation of the Centrality observables for each CMSSW release.
- Tag&Probe for Muons, Cesar Bernardes and Angelo Santos are currently working in Tag and Probe efficiencies calculations for muons with high pT. The Tag and Probe is a Data-Driven method to evaluate selection efficiencies for objects, e.g. electrons and muons. They use a dedicated tool developed by Muon POG in the CMS collaboration to perform these studies.
DØ Collaboration
- Muon Software Expert, Angelo Santos developed an algorithm to correct Monte Carlos samples of muons used for many analyzers in the DØ collaboration. A particle traveling through the detector is sensitive to effects of matter interactions, being affected by the magnetic field and the alignment of the detector. The reconstruction of the muon pattern and momentum are not properly modeled by simulation. A software was created to compute scale factors and correct the muon transverse momentum. The algorithm consists of comparing dimoun invariant mass distributions and extract parameters from the best fit between data and Monte Carlo. As an expert of the Muon Software, Angelo Santos provided scale factors correspondent to eleven different combinations of events from data and simulations during two years.
- Data Acquisition Shifts, Angelo Santos took part on the Data Acquisition Shifts on DØ collaboration for 42 turns of 8 hours. The DØ detector shut down, but when active, it runs during 24 hours taking data from proton-antiproton collisions in the center of the detector, being important to monitor each component and assure a proper performance of all subsystems during data-taking. As a Data Acquisition Shifter, Angelo Santos was responsible for monitoring the data flow through all three level of triggers and guarantee a correct recording of data.
